The term “hosting” does not describe only one service, but a number of services which provide various functions to a domain. Having a website and e-mails, for instance, are two independent services despite the fact that in the general case they come together, so most of the people see them as one single service. In fact, each and every domain name has a number of DNS records called A and MX, which show the server that deals with each specific service - the first one is a numeric IP address, that identifies where the website for the domain name is loaded from, while the latter is an alphanumeric string, which shows the server that manages the emails for the domain name. As an illustration, an A record can be 123.123.123.123 and an MX record is mx1.domain.com. Every time you open a website or send an email, the global DNS servers are contacted to check the name servers that a domain has and the traffic/message is first directed to that company. In case you have custom records on their end, the web browser request or the e-mail will then be forwarded to the correct server. The idea behind using separate records is that the two services employ different web protocols and you can have your website hosted by one company and the emails by another.

Custom MX and A Records in Cloud Hosting

If you have a Linux cloud plan from us, you're going to be able to see, create and modify any A or MX record for your domain names. Provided that a particular Internet domain has our Name Servers, you are going to be able to to modify particular records through our Hepsia hosting CP and have your website or emails directed to any other provider if you wish to use only one of our services. Our leading-edge tool will allow you to have a domain address hosted here and a subdomain below it to be hosted elsewhere by modifying only its A record - this will not affect the main domain name the slightest bit. If you choose to use the e-mail services of another provider and they want you to set up more than 2 MX records, you can easily do that with simply a few clicks in the DNS Records section of your Control Panel. You can also set different latency for each MX record i.e. which one is going to have priority.

Custom MX and A Records in Semi-dedicated Servers

If you buy a semi-dedicated server plan through our company, you will be able to see and change the A and MX records for any of the domains or subdomains which you host in the account. The Hepsia CP, which you'll get to control the account, offers an innovative, though easy-to-use tool where all hosts will be listed in alphabetical order and you're going to be able to edit their records with no more than several clicks. If you have to set up a new record, it's going to be equally easy - choose the domain/subdomain, type in the IP address or mail server record and you are going to be all set. Additionally, you will be able to set different priority for the MX records you create in case that you want to use a third-party e-mail provider and they ask you to set up additional records aside from the two standard ones. If you ever experience any difficulties, we have a in-depth Help section with videos where you can see first-hand how to setup or edit any record.
